Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) is the largest institute in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It was founded in 1952 as the Institute of Instrumentation. After merging with the Changchun Institute of Physics in 1999, it assumed its current name.
    With knowledge innovation and high-tech innovation” as its guiding principle, CIOMP is a multidisciplinary institute that covers the areas of luminescence, applied optics, optical engineering, and precision mechanics and instruments.
    In the past 61 years, CIOMP has developed more than 10 advanced instruments known as “China firsts,” such as the first ruby laser and the first large theodolite. CIOMP has patented over 900 research results and completed 1,700 research projects since its establishment. Honored as the “cradle of Chinese optics,” CIOMP has been instrumental in the establishment of more than 10 optical research institutes, colleges, and enterprises. CIOMP has trained over 2,200 professionals, among whom 22 have been elected as members of CAS or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. WANG Daheng, the founder of Chinese optics, and JIANG Zhuying, honored as a model for Chinese intellectuals, were also from CIOMP, along with many other outstanding scientists.
    CIOMP has achieved great progress since the beginning of the new century by upholding the concept of “integrating research, industry and education” and following the motto “science promotes innovation, industry serves the country.” CIOMP has overcome many key technological obstacles and recorded many significant achievements. In basic research, CIOMP has mastered the key technologies of large-aperture optical system design, placing China at the forefront of deep space exploration. By perfectingoff-axis three-mirror anastigmatic optical systems, CIOMP has reached the top of the international ladder in the field of optical system design. In aviation, CIOMP has many technical advantages and has completed a large number of national projects.
CIOMP has always attached great importance to academic exchange and cooperation with the international S&T community. CIOMP has established formal contacts with major research and academic organizations in more than 20 countries and signed more than 30 cooperative agreements at the institute level.
